157-year-old Louisville retailer prepares for closing

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Burdorf Interiors, a home furnishings retailer here since 1867, is closing.

The company reported the news on Aug. 2 on Facebook, citing the loss of its owner in 2020. The news has since been picked up by local outlets.

“Allan Morris led this company for almost 30 years, and it isn’t the same without him,” company officials wrote in the Facebook post.

Burdorf has been open in several locations in the Derby City since its founding 157 years ago. Morris bought it in 1993 and moved it to its current Middletown location a decade ago.

Since Aug. 4, Burdorf changed its open hours to Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and its merchandise has been marked down to liquidate inventory. The Facebook post indicated that leaders were targeting Aug. 10 for the last day of general operations on the showroom floor, while deliveries and pick-ups would remain until all orders are fulfilled.

“We would like to thank all of our customers and patrons for an incredible run, and a ton of great memories and milestones in this business,” the Facebook post said.
