This is such a forgiving costume to put together and you can put your spin on your own Cruella Deville costume DIY depending on what you have in your closet or what you can find at the thrift store. She is such a high-fashion villain with an iconic look.

We have an annual neighborhood Halloween party that we look forward to every year. If you missed it, last year I made scary scarecrow masks for my husband and me.
For this year, I wanted to put something together that was less messy than last year’s DIY mask and fit this year’s Halloween party theme. When a friend gave me a black full-length fur coat, I knew that I had to use it for a Cruella Deville costume. I also have several other faux furs from Zara and Free People in my wardrobe that I could have used. There are many different versions of Cruella with the last movie starring Emma Stone wearing all black. Emma Stone’s Cruella wardrobe was pretty cool! I think if you have a good black and white wig and some red and black and white accessories, then everyone will recognize who you are supposed to be. So have fun with it.
Clothing and accessories used
The color scheme for a classic Cruella costume is always black and white, with some red and a bit of green.
I purchased more than one wig and the one I used fit me the best. I have a large head and not all of them had a good fit.
- long cigarette holder
- black and white Cruella wig and wig cap (I used this wig but also purchased this wig and this teased-up wig which didn’t fit right on my head but were good quality)
- long red satin gloves (short gloves work too)
- I had the skirt, corset, and necklace (any dressy black outfit will do)
- red lipstick
- red heels (black works great too, I used my black thigh-high boots because that’s what I had and I wanted to stay warm, plus my feet can’t handle many heels anymore)
- big fake diamond rings for over the red gloves
- any fur coat or faux fur coat in black, black and white, or solid white (or even a red fur coat like Glenn Close did but they are harder to find)
- more ideas of what you could use: green eyeshadow (I wore sunglasses instead), any black and white outfit you might have, a walking stick/cane, a pearl necklace, large fancy earrings or other oversized costume jewelry
If you are making this a couple’s outfit or even a family affair, my husband was wearing this Dalmatian hoodie set which is super affordable. This could be so cute if you dress up your kids as Dalmatians. Thanks to my husband for being a good sport!
Cruella Deville (or Cruella de Vil) makeup
You can start with pale makeup to get that Cruella skin color but I didn’t want to buy a bottle of makeup that I won’t use again. If you feel like it go all out and start with that.
Then I used a lot of green eye shadow that I had left from my daughter’s fairy makeup. I used my standard black eyeliner and mascara. Fake eyelashes would look great with this costume as well. I had long nails and wasn’t able to grab them, so I skipped those too. Sometimes they are so tricky to put on.
The red lipstick was $10 from CVS because I didn’t have any on hand but bold red lips are a must for this costume.
Also, add black to your eyebrows to make them stand out more.
Alright, this below photo is very out of character for a Cruella costume but I couldn’t help myself. Willy was just too cute and matched. Who needs a Dalmatian when you can have a tuxedo cat?
For my version of Cruella, I ended up not wearing the green eyeshadow because I had a reaction to the green eye makeup and didn’t feel like buying more. I love the look of the sunglasses instead too. So if you want to wear green eye shadow, I hope you find one that works for you.
I’m always having trouble taking photos of myself.
DIY Cruella Deville costume outfit
You can’t really see in the photos what I was wearing under the outfit. I took my fur coat off a couple of times while I was inside and I can’t find the photos. But that proves my point that you can literally wear anything black (or a red dress) that you can find in your own closet.
My black pencil skirt, corset, and thigh-high boots are super old and from before I had kids. You could even just wear black leggings and a fancy top. Black or red pumps or boots work great. The thrift store is a good place to start if you can’t to find something in your own closet. Or even ask a friend to borrow something.
If you can’t find a fur coat to wear, this Dalmatian shawl is super affordable and would look great.
