FILED: An Upper Eastside Classic

This is the home of Lauren McGrath, half of the mother/daughter design firm McGrath II. These photos were originally featured on My Domaine and photographed by Lucas Allen. (I found more photos of this room posted here.)

This image has long been stuck in my head, mainly because of those beautiful ceiling-high bookcases and arched doorway. Those things, along with the carved mantel are tough to replicate in most of our homes, so I suggested an arched mirror and a carved console as alternatives below. I really love how the books are the star of the show, with bright white walls and a soft muted palette on the upholstery that allows different patterns to mix seamlessly. I’m also a big fan of large coffee table that’s a clean, modern contrast to the mantel and other, more traditional elements in the space.

Enjoying my FILED series? I also highlighted a layered living room and a cozy home office.
