WASHINGTON – The Kroger Company and Albertsons Cos. have released a list of the 579 stores they propose to sell off as they seek Federal Trade Commission approval for their proposed merger.
The list includes stores in 18 states and Washington D.C., along with 6 distribution centers. The new slate expands upon a previous roster of 413 stores.
Kroger-owned Fred Meyer superstores are not among the locations. Last fall, up to 49 Fred Meyer stores were in the mix for potential sales to C&S Wholesale Grocers, according to local news reports.
As part of Krogers’ proposed $24.6 billion merger with Albertsons, the parties have addressed the FTC’s antitrust concerns by pledging to divest hundreds of stores to C&S Wholesale Grocers, a wholesaler that also owns Grand Union and Piggly Wiggly supermarkets.
Fred Meyer, a hybrid grocer and general merchandise format, including a furniture department, operates 132 stores across Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Alaska. It was acquired by Kroger in 1998.
