PORTLAND, Ore. – The fourth state to implement a mattress recycling program will come online Jan. 1, 2025.
Oregon’s Department of Environmental Quality has given the Mattress Recycling Council the go-ahead to establish and administer the program. Oregon will be the fourth state to implement a program joining California, Connecticut and Rhode Island.
Under the plan and Oregon’s state law, retailers, manufacturers, importers, distributors and renovators of mattresses and foundations sold in the state must register with MRC. Soon the implementation begins, and retailers and others selling mattresses and foundations to consumers and large-volume buyers such as hotels and colleges will begin collecting $22.50 per unit.
The amount must be listed as a line item on the receipt, invoice or other sales documentation. Visit MRCreporting.org to register or for more information.
Connecticut implemented a program in 2015, and programs in California and Rhode Island went into effect in 2016. Since then, the Mattress Recycling Council says it has recycled more than 13 million mattresses diverting more than 500 million pounds of materials from landfills.
“MRC encourages the mattress industry, solid waste facilities and other interested parties to learn about this program and understand their role in a successful recycling program,” said Mike O’Donnell, MRC’s chief operating officer. “We offer a library of resources and have a wonderful team ready to answer your questions.”
Between now and the program’s launch, MRC will implement a statewide network to collect and recycle discarded mattresses from communities and businesses across Oregon, as well as publicize the legal obligations of different parties in the mattress distribution chain.
