NRF’s 2024 top 100 retailers list reflects ‘post-pandemic return to normal’

WASHINGTON – The National Retail Federation has released its annual list of the Top 100 Retailers, its annual ranking of the industry’s largest companies according to domestic sales.

“This year’s list of the Top 100 Retailers largely reflects a post-pandemic return to normal,” said Mark Matthews, NRF executive director of research. “As consumer spending continues to moderate, retailers are prioritizing convenience and value for their customers.”

Compiled by Kantar, a global marketing data, insight and consultancy company, Walmart held its top position in the listing with $635.02 billion in U.S. retail sales in 2023. Amazon.com ranked second with sales of $359.93 billion, followed by Costco Wholesale at $234.20 billion, The Kroger Co. at $149.61 billion and The Home Depot at $150.73 billion.

Among the top 10, there were minimal shifts, with Target shifting to the seventh spot from the sixth and CVS Health Corp. moving from the seventh position to take Target’s place in the sixth spot.

“Similar to last year, there was modest change within the top 100 retailers, particularly within the top 20,” said David Marcotte, Kantar’s senior vice president of global insights and technology. “These companies are substantial and have the existing capital and credit to maintain their position with ease.”

Looking at the complete list, notable changes were observed from companies like Harbor Freight Tools, which continued its growth trajectory by moving 18 spots from No. 80 on the list to hold spot 62. With a store count increase of 8.5% for a total of 1,410 stores, it is expanding the fastest of any retailer on the list. Also worth noting is Dollar General’s robust store growth of 5.5%, which landed the retailer at No. 17 on the list.

The Top 100 Retailers are ranked by past 52/53-week annual retail sales; in almost all instances, sales used to rank companies are for retail activity in the United States only. To see the complete list, and learn more about its methodology, visit the NRF’s website.
