Ohio retailer sued by state for alleged spate of consumer losses


YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost is suing high-end home décor retailer Burke Décor, alleging that hundreds of customers reported paying for furnishings that they never received.

In a suit filed on March 19 in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court, the attorney general says there are more than 350 complaints and estimated losses exceeding $380,000, and Yost asks the court to hold Burke Décor and owner Erin Burke accountable and to secure restitution. WKBN first reported the story.

“Consumers paid for high-end furnishings but ended up with only frustration.” Yost said. “My office gave this company the opportunity to make this right, but empty promises don’t fill homes.”

Burke Décor operates two brick-and-mortar locations in Boardman, Ohio, and Los Angeles, as well as an outlet in Youngstown. The company also sells home furnishings through its website.

The Ohio Attorney General’s Office launched an investigation into the business last year after receiving a growing number of consumer complaints regarding non-delivery, slow delivery and difficulties with obtaining refunds.

Yost’s office said Burke Décor initially cooperated in resolving consumer disputes, but 256 consumer complaints remain unresolved. Yost’s lawsuit seeks restitution for affected consumers, injunctive relief to prevent further deceptive practices and civil penalties.

Last year, Burke Décor announced plans to reorganize, with a multi-step process designed to reduce debt, raise capital and improve profitability.

Burke Décor has not yet responded to Furniture Today’s request for a comment.
