EVANSVILLE, Ind. — There was some shuffling of residents among states this year, with the Northeast, Southeast and Northwest being among the biggest beneficiaries.
The Atlas Van Lines Annual Migration Patterns Study — the 30th for the company — reveals the Top 10 states where people have been moving to and from this past year. Topping the list of states getting an influx of people were Maine, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Montana, Washington, Arkansas, Florida, New Mexico, District of Columbia and Texas.
North Carolina and Maine were at the top of the list in 2022 as well, while New Hampshire vaulted from 10th to third.
On the flip side, the top states losing residents were Illinois, Pennsylvania, Louisiana, Minnesota, Indiana, Oregon, Iowa, Mississippi, New York and Ohio.
Some of this movement data lines up with Realtor.com’s October Hottest Housing Markets data, which put Manchester-Nashua, N.H., as the hottest metro, with Concord, N.H., ranked fifth. Portland-South Portland, Maine, was 12th on Realtor.com’s list after holding the No. 3 spot in September.
However, several cities in Ohio, which was a state called out for people exiting it, were among the hot metros: Columbus (No. 8), Dayton (No. 13) and Akron (No. 14). One reason could be that they fell below the national median home price, which was $425,000 to $430,000 in September, making them attractive to buyers. The median listing for Columbus was $367,000, while it was $524,000 for No. 1 ranked Manchester-Nashua, N.H., and $600,000 for Portland-South Portland, Maine.
Realtor.com measures hot markets using two factors: market demand based on unique views of properties on its website and the pace of the market as measured by the number of days a listing remains active on the site.
