TUSCON, Ariz. – Tucson-based furniture retailer Sam Levitz, No. 78 on this year’s Top 100 Furniture Retailers list from Furniture Today, has closed one store and will close two more, according to a local news report.
Tucson news station KGUN9 reported the retailer closed one store in Oro Valley (north of Tucson) and plans to close two more stores in Tucson in late September.
Closing stores include the Sam’s Furniture Outlet on 2020 W. Prince Road and the Sam Levitz store on 3430 E. 36th St., per the report. Only one store, located at 3750 W. Orange Grove Road, is set to remain open.
The company’s website indicates that a significant clearance sale is currently taking place, with “huge” markdowns on living room furniture, mattresses, leather, upholstery, dining and more.
Sam Levitz is a family-owned business founded in 1953. It offers mid-priced furniture in the metro Tucson area, in addition to running three Ashley Furniture stores. Its vendors include Ashley, Tempur-Sealy, Elements and Cheers/Manwah, while also operating Flexsteel and IFD galleries. The retailer sells online, too, with 7% of 2023 sales coming via e-commerce. Its stores average 45,000 square feet with average sales of $309 per square foot.
At the April High Point Market, Amber Levitz, the company’s vice president of merchandising and visual design and granddaughter of company founder Sam Levitz, revealed plans for a high-end showroom in Tucson called Lounge by Levitz. That appears to have opened inside the Orange Grove store. It’s still listed as open on the company’s website.
Levitz has not returned Furniture Today’s requests for comment. We will update this story as information becomes available.
