Bedding Industries of America is celebrating the 120th anniversary of the Eclipse brand with a new collection.
HIGH POINT – In 1905, Teddy Roosevelt was sworn in as president, the city of Las Vegas was created, and the Eclipse mattress brand was founded.
The brand, owned by Bedding Industries of America, celebrates its 120th anniversary this year, and the company unveiled at the spring High Point Market a three-bed collection marking the milestone.
Available in a choice of three comfort levels the new models feature the company’s Spinal Zone III technology that helps reinforce the center of the mattress with more than 1,400 nano coils. The mattresses feature an eye-catching blue border with contrasting blue handles, and in addition to the nano coils, the build includes 800 pocketed coils, layers of gel memory foam and high-density foams.
Priced to retail at $1,499 in queen, the mattresses can be shipped roll-packed or flat. A percentage of sales from the collection will be donated to Ante4Autism, a charity the company has long supported.
Founded in Brooklyn, N.Y., the company said Eclipse grew to be one of the most recognizable brands in the 1950s and 1960s when department stores were the leading channel for mattresses.
“Eclipse had a strong presence on all the major department store floors across the country from Macy’s to Gimbles to JCPenney to Lit Brothers,” said Stuart Carlitz, founder of BIA. In order to keep up with the growth and needs of the department stores, Eclipse eventually merged with National Mattress Co. in the mid-1970s and operated successfully until eventually ceasing operations in 1999.
Carlitz acquired the brand, purchased the intellectual property, labels, point-of-sale materials and some machinery. Following the acquisition, Carlitz brought back his company’s original name, Bedding Industries of America.
“I had a vision about what Bedding Industries of America would become and believed that we needed the flexibility of multiple brands with a unique product assortment in order to grow, eventually becoming the one-stop shop for dealers that we are today,” Carlitz said. “Some of the greatest things that have been accomplished in our company have been under the Eclipse umbrella, from Eclipse Ice to Eclipse Curve, and now Spinal Zone III. The most exciting thing is that while Eclipse has been around for more than a century, it is a brand that is tuned into the modern consumer.”
