Chic DIY boho ornaments using pampas grass

I tend to call my home decor Vintage European Boho style. That’s a mouthful, I know but I love my vintage German decor that I brought with me from Germany and also lots of boho accessories with my many macrame projects and boho color scheme. I’ve been wanting to make today’s DIY boho ornaments for a while now because I love pampas grass so much. So let me show you how you can easily customize glass ball ornaments and turn them into chic boho Christmas ornaments with some dried grasses.

Chic DIY boho ornaments using pampas grass

I didn’t mention yet, that when I was just in Germany in November, I saw ornaments like this for sale at a decorating store and thought to myself that this is the year I will make them. I have so many glass ornaments like this in the attic and all these grasses and pampas grass left from other projects and decor. There really is no need to buy these finished for a higher price especially if you can make them with things you have already or you can even find the grasses outside.

Materials needed to make these boho pampas grass ornaments

• a variety of dried grasses or flowers like bunny tail grass and pampas grass
• glass ball ornaments with removable top
• ribbon
• hot glue and hot glue gun
• scissors

(I used the same bunny tail grass for my paper moth tutorial. They are perfect for creating the fuzzy body of a moth.)

Step-by-step tutorial

This is a very easy DIY tutorial and can be quickly recreated. I showed you the ornaments in my Holiday Housewalk with my new cheap Amazon Christmas tree but never shared how I made the DIY boho ornaments. So let’s get started…

Remove the metal top and loop

Start by gently removing the top with your fingers. Just pull on the metal loop that holds the metal top in place on the glass ball ornament until it comes off.

Stuff a variety of grasses inside the glass ball

You can just stuff grasses inside the glass ornament and let them fall and rest on the bottom. I however wanted to have them hanging from the top so they would be floating in the inside of the ball ornament.

I started with the bunny tail grasses and then I snipped smaller pieces of pampas grass from a large plum with my scissors. The pampas grass tends to fall apart so I used some hot glue to keep the little pieces together on one side. Then I stuffed that small bunch of pampas grass into the glass orbe as well.

I also glued the pampas grass to the bunny tail grass stem so they would stay together.

Reattach the metal top

Take the metal loop part out of the metal top. Then add some hot glue to the top of the metal top of the Christmas ball ornament before pushing it back on top of the ornament. I let the grass stems stick through the center of the top.

In the next step, you have to pinch the looped metal wire piece that is used for hanging the ribbon. Then insert the pinched metal wire piece into the opening of the metal top. You will hear it snap in place.

Now all you need to do is to cut off the remainder of the grass stems flush with the metal top.

Hang your boho ornaments with ribbon or twine

I used jute yarn for the ones that I used as gift toppers. And also tried white ribbons with tied bows when hanging them inside a Christmas tree which you can see below.

If you haven’t noticed yet, I just enjoyed making lots of my own homemade Christmas ornaments and decor this season. I didn’t write any gift guides or pushed decor that I purchased. The main reason is that this is what I love doing and I hope that it shows in the blog posts that I write. There is just so much noise and content overload everywhere. It is therapeutic to me to just sit down, turn on a Christmas movie, and craft away. This is my way of sharing that with you.
