NEW YORK — Homeowners in the West have proven to be the top spenders when it comes to home décor, according to new research.
At $3,037, the West topped the list for annual household expenditure on home furnishings and equipment, while the Northeast slipped into second place with $2,727 per household, followed by the Midwest at $2,442 and the South, $2,146.
The research, compiled by online custom framing company Level Frames using U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data, revealed that Western U.S. households grew their furnishings spending by 32% over five years. In the Northeast, spending increased by 21.2% between 2019 and 2023, with New York as the top-spending state.
In the Midwest, spending rose by 25% over the five-year period, led by big spenders in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Illinois. Texas, Louisiana and Florida residents gave the boost to the South region, which increased spending by less than 10% from 2019 to 2023.
Overall, U.S. household spending on décor was projected to rise to $37.1 billion in 2025, up nearly 5% from $35.4 billion in 2024.
Based on Google keyword searches for interior design inspiration, home organization and cleaning hacks, the most “house proud” state was California, with more than 20,000 searches. Texas, Florida, New York and Ohio comprised the top 5, with North Carolina, Illinois, Georgia, Pennsylvania and Virginia rounding out the top 10.
Google search data also showed that walk-in closets, with 226,100 searches, was the No. 1 trend inspiring Americans, far outpacing the No. 2 search, which was shelving. Laundry rooms, gallery walls and home office inspiration made up the remainder of the Top 5 ideas consumers checked out.
