Why an Olive Green Bedroom Might Be the Best Color for You

I didn’t expect to fall head over heels for an olive green bedroom… but here we are.

After months of pinning bedroom inspiration and daydreaming about wrapping our space in a cozy, moody cocoon, we finally took the plunge. We painted our primary bedroom Benjamin Moore Vintage Vogue, and y’all… it’s everything I hoped for and more.

Here is what our bedroom looked like a couple weeks ago. I loved the moody black, but I really wanted some color. And I figured while we were at it, why not go ahead and color drench it?

We ran out of paint before we could paint our closet doors, but now that’s left us with a decision. Do we go 100% color drench by painting the doors too? Or do we leave them white? Which would you choose?

If you’ve been on the fence about going dark and moody in the bedroom, or you’re wondering if olive green is the right color for you, let me give you the scoop on why this shade has completely stolen our hearts.

1. Olive Green Is the Perfect Balance of Moody and Calming

There’s something about olive green bedrooms that hits this magical sweet spot. It’s earthy and grounding without feeling too heavy. It’s moody without being too dark. Basically, it’s the color equivalent of a warm hug on a chilly night.

2. It Pairs Beautifully with Neutrals and Natural Textures

One of the reasons I picked Benjamin Moore Vintage Vogue is because it plays so well with all the other colors and textures I love—creamy linens, warm wood tones, aged brass (y’all know I’m on an antique brass kick lately), and even black or white accents.

An olive green bedroom gives you a versatile backdrop that can go farmhouse, cottage, modern, or traditional depending on what you pair with it. We mixed in our upholstered storage bed, linen bedding, and a vintage art printable with a thrifted frame, and the whole space just feels layered and rich without being fussy.

3. It Works in All Kinds of Lighting

This one surprised me! We have a northeast facing bedroom, which means it has cool, blue-toned light in the morning but shifts to a warmer, more golden hue as the day progresses. So it’s tricky to find a paint color that works well with cool toned and warm toned light.

Our room gets a mix of morning sun and afternoon shadows with a lot of green light reflected into the room from the trees in our yard, and Vintage Vogue manages to look gorgeous at every time of day. In the morning, it feels soft and fresh. In the evening, it feels like a cozy retreat.

That’s one of the reasons olive green bedrooms are a good idea if you have a hard time figuring out undertones. It’s a color that flexes depending on your lighting and your mood. Olive green is the ultimate “neutral with personality”.

4. It Makes Your Bedroom Feel Like a Sanctuary

There’s been a huge trend toward making bedrooms feel more like spa-like retreats or cozy sanctuaries (because life is exhausting, am I right?). Olive green bedrooms totally deliver on that front. The color feels connected to the outdoors, but still envelops the space in this quiet, restful vibe.

Thinking About an Olive Green Bedroom? Here’s What to Know:

  • Sample first. Olive can lean more yellow or more gray depending on your space. I highly recommend testing a few shades on your walls first using my white balance undertone test.
  • Go all in. I’m a big fan of color drenching (walls, trim, and even ceiling) for maximum cozy factor. That’s what we did, and it made the space feel extra intentional and dramatic.
  • Balance it with texture. Bring in natural textures like rattan, linen, and wood to keep the space feeling soft and layered.
  • Don’t overthink it. Olive green is surprisingly forgiving and works with so many styles.
